I was afraid this was going to happen. Earlier today it was announced that the U.S. Olympic Committee selected New York over San Francisco for the 2012 Olympics bid. Even though the San Francisco area has almost all of the sports facilities that would be needed to host the games, the USOC thought NYC would be a better choice. The USOC president said the "compactness" of New York's bid was decisive, citing concerns about traffic. I'll agree that traffic in the Bay Area can be challenging, but it's nothing compared to the traffic jams I have encountered in NY. Obviously sympathy played a larger role than anyone from the USOC is going to admit.
